Ronald Reagan's Epitaph - 'I Ignored AIDS'
Media outlets are busy reflecting on President Ronald Reagan this weekend since Sunday would have been his 100th birthday.
As a gay man who lived (no thanks to Reagan) through his presidency and the AIDS epidemic I do not and will not ever bestow honor upon Ronald Reagan.
Ronald Reagan is a man who shirked his presidential responsibility due to his own personal bigotry and biases.
Ronald Reagan was a president who ignored AIDS, in the public eye, and the horrendous effects it was having on citizens of our country. It seems Ronald Reagan was just fine with AIDS when it was killing gays. It wasn't until the disease spread outside the gay community that we heard Reagan even mention the word AIDS to the public (that was in his second term).
Ironically if Reagan would have acted immediately AIDS would not have reached the epidemic proportions we see today. Ronald Reagan purposely ignored an entire group of United States Citizens whom he swore, on the bible, to protect and serve.
To say he ignored our community is not totally accurate because his behind the scenes work, setting up roadblocks, was obvious. In other words, not only did he ignore AIDS and the gay community, he actually has blood on his hands for his efforts at stopping any governmental assistance.
President Reagan, after being sent invitations, refused to view the AIDS Quilt.
The first president to view the AIDS Quilt was Clinton.
Due the the vast size of the AIDS Quilt it will never be displayed in it's entirety again. In other words, these were missed, once in a lifetime, historical moments!
Many claim history will be the true judge.
So on this day when most of the media is celebrating the life of President Ronald Reagan I suggest we all speak very loudly about this mans action and inaction which added vast numbers to the AIDS death toll.
This is Scotts' AIDS quilt (my lover).
Perhaps Scott would have had more than 29 years on this earth if President Reagan would have done his job without prejudice and bias!
For a President to ignore parts of his citizenry, allowing them to die, is unforgivable, contemptible and inexcusable.
With great power comes great responsibility. As President Ronald Reagan has proven, only great men are capable of meeting such power and responsibility with justice for all.
Unfortunately, Ronald Reagan was not a great man!
