Dave Burk, who teaches consumer education at Geneva High School, reportedly made the comments earlier this month during a talk about consumer tax. Student Jordan Hunter told the Chicago Sun-Times that Burk said: "How would you feel about your tax dollars going to pay some black fag in New York to take pictures of other black fags?" Hunter, who is gay, said: "If he wants to talk about a poor place to put our tax dollars, I think his salary is a poor place to put our tax dollars." by Amy Wooten Windy City Times Chicago In order to further boost LGBT inclusion, the leaders of nearly a dozen North Side United Church of Christ ( UCC ) churches are putting their heads together. While hundreds of UCC churches and ministries have gone one step beyond saying they are welcoming to LGBT folks by officially and publicly declaring to be open and affirming ( ONA ) , this cluster of North Side ONA UCC churches wants to take it a step further. A consortium of North Side UCC ONA churches, which includes several with openly gay and lesbian leaders, started meeting to reassess their participation in the local queer community. They wish to re-evaluate where these area churches are now and what should be done next. full article

Capping a race that drew worldwide attention, Rev. Jeffrey Lee, a Midwest native, was overwhelmingly elected Saturday as the next Episcopal bishop of Chicago. Lee, 50, is rector of St. Thomas Church in Medina, Wash., but was born and raised near Kalamazoo, Mich., and ordained in northern Indiana. He becomes Chicago's 12th Episcopal bishop and leader of 41,000 Episcopalians. When asked about his stance on gays in the church, Lee said he supported full inclusion. "I believe God is calling us to full inclusion of gays and lesbians in ministry of this church. ... There is a place for everyone in the church, and the church has to catch up with God's vision," he said. Since Gene Robinson, of New Hampshire, was consecrated as the Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop four years ago, 65 of the more than 7,000 U.S. parishes have started to break away from the national church.
