With the millions of dollars heaped upon passage of Proposition 8 in California it was hard to imagine it would be struck down. Many people fought a good fight and are to be commended. I’m sure many religious folks are very happy with the outcome. But when it comes right down to it they preserved a word, because, as we all know, given the divorce rate in the USA, there is very little sanctity or morality left in marriage. The greater victory last night was on a federal level with the election of Barack Obama as the next President of the United States. President Obama will level this marriage “playing field” on the federal level and of course, as we all know, Federal Law supercedes state law. Perhaps it won’t be called marriage but it will confer all the same Rights as marriage and after all, that is the goal. If you’re still stinging over the unsuccessful bid for nomination by Hillary Clinton, it’s time to look forward, even if the disappointment still hurts. We are faced with the most stark choice in recent memory, with ramifications for our community like no other. If nothing else convinces you to vote for Barack Obama, surely the likelihood of the next president appointing one, two, or possibly even three Supreme Court justices should do it. With John McCain, we will see the conservative near-majority on the Court shift to a solid majority – with devastating results when the “full faith and credit clause” of the Constitution is challenged in the recognition of gay marriages. Thompson Defends Anti-Gay Marriage Stance NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson said he's met frequently with influential social conservatives who are willing to accept his position on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage even though it doesn't go quite as far as they would like. Thompson favors a constitutional amendment that bars judges from legalizing gay marriage. "What I have done is fashion something that says judges can't do that any more," said Thompson. He said the practical effect of his proposal would be a ban on gay marriages.

In a stunning display of ignorance, Republican presidential candidate John McCain admitted that he had no idea what the acronym LGBT stands for. In Concord, New Hampshire, McCain was asked by a high school student what he intended to do to protect LGBT rights. McCain looked confused, and then, when it was explained to him that LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, McCain stammered, “I had not heard that phrase before”. As a United States Senator, John McCain is supposed to keep himself informed on the important political issues of the day, but it appears that McCain has neglected this duty. America cannot afford to have such an ill-informed man as President. After all, if a President does not even know what the LGBT community is, there is very little likelihood that he will act to protect the rights of people in that community.
