Dear General Conway, I recently read an article that claims you stated separate quarters would be required for gay servicemembers if DADT was removed. Of course we all know the gay servicemembers currently exist, they simply are not allowed to state they are gay. This means servicemembers are currently in the same quarters with non-gay servicemembers. In other words, you are saying it’s not the issue that the servicemembers are gay. It’s the issue of people knowing they are gay. This strongly suggest personal bias is at play because the gay servicemember is still the same person. The gay servicemember has not changed. General Conway, in essence, you are saying ‘as long as they stay in the closet it’s ok but if they come out of the closet it’s not okay’. Again, I say to you, the individual does not change because your knowledge of them changes! You then go on to claim that Marines don’t want to bunk with gays because Marines are ‘very religious’. Through my years I have witnessed what I would term an age of transgression in these United States. Being born into a military officers family I often heard the phrase “Oh, you’re an officer’s son. Born with a silver spoon in your mouth.” But you must remember I was an officer’s son. So I had my own ‘duty to uphold’. With rank comes responsibility. I was an officer’s son. I simply responded with a slight smile. I remember, as a child, if we ever saw a person walking on the road in a military uniform we stopped and gave them a ride. We seldom picked up anyone in civilian clothes. Perhaps I’m biased but I don’t think it had so much to do with the clothing as it did the actual person. Anyone who’s been part of the military knows it changes you. When a soldier fights shoulder to shoulder with another person there is a bond created. Indeed the military becomes your family. Dear Mr. President, I'm a pretty patient guy, Mr. President. I must be, considering that while you were celebrating your 6th birthday I was putting my life on the line for my country, serving as a Military Policeman in Vietnam, even though I had to lie every minute of every waking hour to do so. Edwards, the former Senator for North Carolina, has been part of the campaign to end the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding LGBT members of the armed forces.
