Believe it or not the proponents of proposition 8 and I agree. We agree on the point that children will be affected. However, we disagree on the how children will be affected! The proponents will have you believe children will be harmed by equality while the truth of the matter is that children will reap great rewards. And, in turn the world will be a better place for all. Let’s think about the children who are wards of the state and children who are currently being raised in a same-sex household. By the simple existence of children who are wards of the state we know there obviously are more children than parents to care for them. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were no such thing as wards of the state? Doesn’t it make sense if there are more parents then there will be less wards of the state? MY CONVERSION TO gay activism — on behalf of family values, as it were — took place more than 20 years ago. But the experience has taken on new poignancy in light of today’s passionate objections to gay equality on purported moral and religious grounds. On October 11, 1987 — a date now annually commemorated as National Coming Out Day — I took part in the national gay and lesbian march on Washington. My daughter had come out as lesbian a few months earlier, and since we live in the Washington metro area, her mother (my ex-wife) and I decided to attend, mainly out of curiosity. We were astonished to find ourselves part of a sea of some 600,000 demonstrators, nestled in a relatively small delegation of about 150 parents. A family, traditionally, has meant man, woman and child. Not any more, as children raised by gay and lesbian couples are on the rise internationally. Laws differ from country to country and even state to state. In the US, Florida is the only state that bans anyone who is a "homosexual" from adopting a child. Utah does that indirectly by restraining unmarried couples from adopting. Washington DC and 11 states, including California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, New Jersey and Vermont explicitly state that sexual orientation cannot prevent gays and lesbians from adopting. Across Europe, in the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Sweden same-sex couples have been given the right to adopt a child. Australia, Canada, South Africa and Israel are some of the other countries to allow it. Jennifer Chrisler knows the score on gay families. The mother of two runs Family Pride, an organization that provides support and secures rights for gay families. When Chrisler took her twin sons to preschool, she picked a liberal, private school in downtown Washington.
