Those comments convinced him to do so. "The homosexual agenda is destroying this nation; it's just a fact,” Kern said in the YouTube clip. "I've yet to knock a door where people have said, ‘Ron, we're worried to death about the gay agenda,'” Marlett said. The killer is in police custody after being subdued by others in the building. The church, Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, had just recently advertised itself as a welcoming gay/lesbian affirming congregation which means exactly what it sounds like. When was the last time an openly gay/lesbian opened fire on a collection of bible fundies hot with the fire of righteousness for the cause of religious purity? When did you last hear an openly gay/lesbian legislator use their personal privilege on the floor of their state legislature or Congress to lobby for the passage of a bill that would limit any demographic group's aspect of their protection of the law as outlined in the Bill of Rights? from Gay.com Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry on Friday vetoed a measure co-sponsored by state Rep. Sally Kern that aimed to protect students from discrimination for expressing their religious views, the Tulsa World reported. Critics of the measure worried that it would allow students to disregard science and history lessons because of conflicting religious teachings. In his veto message, Henry wrote Friday that students are already allowed to express their faith through prayer and other activities during school. full article

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Republican state Rep. Sally Kern, whose widely publicized condemnation of gays and lesbians has provoked calls for her resignation, will have a Democratic opponent in this fall's election, Democratic officials said Monday. Ron Marlett, a 59-year-old social worker, was introduced by state Democratic Party head Ivan Holmes at a news conference where Marlett said statements by Kern that likened homosexuality to terrorism echo the words of extremists. "I've just been concerned for some time about the damage done by extremes," Marlett said. "I abhor hatred. I abhor hatred of people, of groups. I think everyone is worthy of respect." Marlett, a social worker at Community Pathways Unlimited, said he has considered running for public office in the past and that Kern's comments helped him make the decision to seek her Oklahoma City-area seat. full article

Rep Kern: On April 19, 1995, in Oklahoma City a terrorist detonated a bomb that killed my mother and 167 others. 19 children died that day. Had I not had the chicken pox that day, the body count would've likely have included one more. Over 800 other Oklahomans were injured that day and many of those still suffer through their permanent wounds. That terrorist was neither a homosexual or was he involved in Islam. He was an extremist Christian forcing his views through a body count. He held his beliefs and made those who didn't live up to them pay with their lives. As you were not a resident of Oklahoma on that day, it could be explained why you so carelessly chose words saying that the homosexual agenda is worst than terrorism. I can most certainly tell you through my own experience that is not true.
