Media outlets are busy reflecting on President Ronald Reagan this weekend since Sunday would have been his 100th birthday. As a gay man who lived (no thanks to Reagan) through his presidency and the AIDS epidemic I do not and will not ever bestow honor upon Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan is a man who shirked his presidential responsibility due to his own personal bigotry and biases. Ronald Reagan was a president who ignored AIDS, in the public eye, and the horrendous effects it was having on citizens of our country. It seems Ronald Reagan was just fine with AIDS when it was killing gays. It wasn't until the disease spread outside the gay community that we heard Reagan even mention the word AIDS to the public (that was in his second term). Ironically if Reagan would have acted immediately AIDS would not have reached the epidemic proportions we see today.
