As part of a continuing effort to use religion as a way of excluding many Americans, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives recently proposed a resolution that “reaffirms the importance of religion in the lives of United States citizens.”

Introduced Sept. 19 by Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-Tenn.), the resolution includes a number of statements that are offensive to anyone who supports church-state separation or isn’t Christian. Read more

Let’s say someone told you that voting for a certain candidate would be an “evil” act and that by casting your ballot for this candidate, you would in fact be furthering the cause of evil.

You would probably get the impression that the person who made these remarks was telling you not to vote for that candidate, right? Read more

Is Americans United anti-Christian? Of course not.

We exist to defend the constitutional separation of church and state, a principle that protects alike Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, non-believers and persons with all sorts of opinions about religion. But you’d never know that by listening to some of our opponents.

In Hays County, Texas, the Commissioners Court had a habit of opening most of its sessions with Christian prayers. A local resident called AU to object to this sectarian practice, so our legal department sent along a letter on the subject. Read more

It seems that one person’s information is another person’s intimidation.

Several weeks ago, Americans United sent 60,000 letters to houses of worship nationwide urging them not to endorse political candidates this election season. We didn’t do that because we were bored â€" we did it because we’ve seen an uptick in Religious Right efforts to enlist churches into partisan politics. Read more

My wife and I are fans of the Sunday New York Times, and yesterday as we were enjoying the paper over a leisurely breakfast, she nudged me to make note of a story on the front page. I looked and was a little taken aback. Glaring up at me was a photo of an old Americans United nemesis â€" Ralph Reed. The headline read, “An Evangelical Is Back From Exile, Lifting Romney.” Read more

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is not one to shy away from hyperbole, having declared recently that church-state separation is the work of Satan.

During a conference call this week as part of radical pastor Rick Scarborough’s “40 Days to Save America,” which seeks to rally Religious Right voters, Perry went on a lengthy rant about the evils of keeping religion and government apart. Read more

A squad of Texas high school cheerleaders deserves a Bronx cheer for disrespecting church-state separation.

The cheerleaders at Kountze High School in Kountze, Texas, (about 90 miles northeast of Houston) had been using banners with Bible verses to motivate the football team during games. School administrators, however, received an anonymous complaint and rightly ordered the practice stopped.    Read more

Yesterday I received some interesting mail from two residents of Colorado. Each envelope contained the same thing: a 20-page glossy publication produced by Ridgway Christian Center in Ridgway, Colo.

The publication features a calendar of upcoming ministry events and a list of conservative websites that the group recommends. But the most interesting thing about the publication is its cover: It’s a photo of a bunch of American flags headlined, “Honor God! Love your country! VOTE REPUBLICAN!” Read more

Americans United has already raised some concerns about Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s seeming disregard for church-state separation. He is a steady ally of the Religious Right, having been the only governor to attend Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s Christians-only prayer rally in Texas last summer.
