The Present and Historically Evident Oppressive Circle Must Be Broken
Our human history is littered with vast examples of humans being incited to violence. In fact, it is against the law to incite violence. Unfortunately a direct link and intention must be proved. However, the simple fact it is against the law speaks to the seriousness.
Of course, as we all know, social status, skin color, nationality, disability and many other ‘conditions’ that would qualify a person as ‘different’, play a significant role in such violence.
Some historical examples include the hate speech from the southern politician George Wallace that caused many African American deaths. [article]
In the movie Paragraph 175 a gay Jewish man (Gad Beck) tells the story about how his school classmates became very hateful towards him after Hitler came to power and started condemning jews, gays, disabled and any other non-arians. Prior to Hitler, the schoolhouse was not volatile.
Recently a US Representative was shot along with many others in Arizona. Shortly afterwards the news told us of a graphic on Sarah Palin’s Political Action Committee website which had crosshairs over 20 different Democratic politicians. The graphic was promptly removed after the shooting. One of the crosshairs was over Rep. Giffords (the politician who was shot) district. [photo]
Additionally, in Tucson (where the shooting took place) there is a Rush Limbaugh billboard that says ‘Rush Limbaugh – Straight Shooter’. [article]
A while back, in London, there was a music concert featuring a band that sang lyrics promoting violence towards gays. After the concert there was a gay bashing in the vicinity of the concert.
A man joins an anti-abortion group on the internet, the next thing you know, he goes to a church, on a Sunday, and shoots an abortion doctor.
The founders of America came to this continent fleeing oppression. Even though the founders would have perished if not for the local Indian culture, when the local American Indians wouldn’t accept the founders’ religion, they were nearly slaughtered into extinction.
Evidently the historic example of human kind is to conquer. Since this is the mindset of a bully, they naturally pick on the smallest and weakest first. Of course this would be any group that is ‘different’.
And thus we have the vicious circle of oppression repeating itself over and over again even though we have so many vivid examples of why it is wrong.
Hate speech, weather it is religious, political or any other type of hate based speech pushes some people to extremes. To repeat such irresponsible and harmful actions shows the indifference and lack of humanity in our human family.
The circle must be broken!
